Congratulations to all Comrades 2011 Finishers!
On a chilly May 29 just before dawn, Breakthru Midrand was once again well represented at the start of the Comrades Marathon, with many of the club's athletes having made the annual pilgrimage to Durban to test themselves against the "Greatest Human Race." There was the usual pre-race apprehension, and none of the runners who had made it to the start was in quite such a carefree frame of mind as they had been one week previously at the club's traditional "Comrades' Breakfast" hosted in fine style at the Swiss Club!
Breakthru Runners (and Supporters!) Training hard for the big day
Of an impressive 100 members who entered the race back in 2010, a very respectable 66 members made it across the line before the dreaded 12-hour gun was fired. Congratulations go to all from the fastest member, Oupa Baloyi with a silver time of 07:14:39, to Kuben Govender, who might have had a few nervous moments before he crossed the line with minutes to spare in 11:57:03! In all, the club members brought home one silver, seven Bill Rowans, 41 Bronze medals, and 16 Vic Claphams.
There were a number of notable achievements for the club on the day:
Four novices successfully completed the course for the first time - Maxine Dorkin, Erika Nothnagel, Nkosinathi Mazibuko, and Holly Jones.
Andrew Dollenberg reached a significant milestone with his tenth medal to secure a coveted permanent number.
Zama Mahlangu achieved his 15th finish, but still has a way to go to catch some of the club's stalwarts: Andrew Nicolson (17), Hilton Galleid and Trevor Mingard (Both 23). Special mention must of course go to Penny Visser, who with 25 medals is one of the most We make your free annual credit report available to current and prospective creditors, employers and others as permitted by law, which may speed up your ability to get credit. ""decorated"" women in the history of Comrades, and aftre all this time has yet to discover what it feels like to run for longer than 10 hours! A truly astounding performance, and one that no doubt causes many runners half her age to doubt themselves in their weaker moments - well done Penny.
It would appear that the ladies of the club are giving the men something to think about on a number of fronts - in addition to Penny placing fourth in her category, Holly Jones and Caroline Wostmann both achieved 9th places in their respective categories. Caroline was also the only lady in club to secure a Bill Rowan in an impressive 08:33. Maz Moore achieved 11th place in her category, and with 9 medals to her name, we're sure she'll be back to complete the set.
Of course the cliche remains true, and ultimately every runner who makes it from Durban to Maritzburg'in one piece has challenged themselves in a special way and achieved something memorable - congratrulations to you all!
